Québec's Historical Positions

Throughout Québec’s history, its governments have formulated and defended various positions regarding Québec's status, the constitutional powers it exercises or should exercise, relations with the federal, provincial and territorial governments, and other intergovernmental issues.

These positions are summarized in a document titled Québec's Positions on Constitutional and Intergovernmental Issues. They can also be found in resolutions that the Québec National Assembly has adopted, when deemed appropriate, to formally affirm Québec's stance on intergovernmental issues that have particular significance.

Formulated with a view to defending Québec's best interests, these historical positions represent a common thread running through the intergovernmental policies adopted by successive Québec governments. Today, they still serve as a frame of reference for guiding Québec in its intergovernmental relations with other entities in Canada.
